Development project “SolVing II”

Video annotation in a new light.

🔍 The SolVing II research and development project at a glance

From 2022 to 2025, as part of the SolVing II project (€680,967) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, we developed the Social Video Hub—a state-of-the-art platform that redefines the potential of video in learning and work processes.

Our goal was to create an environment that not only simplifies the provision and management of videos, but above all focuses on interactive collaboration and knowledge exchange through video annotation and collaborative functions.

More than a video portal – a collaborative learning environment

The Social Video Hub turns videos into interactive learning spaces. Instead of passively watching, you can comment in real time, mark important points, or exchange ideas with others directly in the video. A special highlight of the Social Video Hub is the “Social Video Board.” It enables cross-video collaboration, supports portfolio work, and serves to document complex processes. The Social Video Board connects asynchronous and synchronous learning and communication processes by enabling collaborative work directly on videos. In addition, users can post precise video comments, make visual markings, and even leave audio feedback.

Practical guide: Using social video learning methods with v-Portfolio in the Social Video Hub

A comprehensive practical guide has been developed to accompany the project, showing how social video learning can be used with the v-Portfolio in various educational contexts.

The guide offers a thorough introduction to the didactic potential of video annotation, presents tried-and-tested methods, and provides concrete task templates—from peer feedback to group annotation. It is aimed at teachers, trainers, instructors, and educational planners who want to make their learning offerings more interactive and reflective.

The Social Video Hub in practice

Extensive pilot projects, including those with the IDM vocational training center and the German Sport University Cologne, have impressively demonstrated the added value of the Social Video Hub in real-world environments. Whether for more effective meeting design through preparatory video content, for permanent documentation of discussions, or as an innovative ePortfolio for exam performance, the Social Video Hub has proven to be a flexible and profitable tool. In particular, the ability to perform qualitative video analysis in sports and make research results accessible to athletes and coaches underscores its versatile applications.
